When to Treat – Timing is Everything
Many homeowners want to know when weed control applications will be done. It is important to understand that weather plays a big factor in weed control and fertilization treatments. When the first warm spring weather hits (whether it be April or May), your lawn comes out of dormancy and weeds start to pop. Please note that there is no pre-emergent for broadleaf weeds. Weeds can only be treated after they’ve sprouted. Once the weeds emerge, our applicators get out and start spraying! If this is your first year with us, it may take some time and patience to get your grass looking the way you want. Keeping up with regular treatments will pay compound benefits as the seasons pass. Your Plan of Attack Against Dandelions
Now that you know when these weeds thrive, it’s time to understand the plan of attack. Liquid selective herbicide treatment after germination is the best way to get rid of weeds. We use properly formulated chemicals to treat specific weeds. For instance, laying down a crabgrass preventative is specifically for that – crabgrass – it does not treat and kill dandelions as well. When you sign up for weed control and fertilization treatments, one full season of treatments includes six applications including crabgrass pre-emergent, weed control, and fertilization services. Fertilizer helps to eliminate weeds by keeping the turf vibrant and healthy. We also highly recommend a seasonal insecticide to prevent grubs and chinch bugs, and a plug aeration service done in the fall. If your yard is overgrown with creeping Charlie or wild violet, then additional applications may be necessary as well. A good way to keep weeds out of your lawn is to make them feel unwelcome in the first place. Keep your lawn thick and healthy, and weeds won’t find a place to settle in. If you mow your lawn at the proper height (one of the 2 highest settings on your mower), water deeply, and feed regularly, you’ll do a lot to keep weeds out of your yard.
The Best Results Need Time
The key to any successful residential lawn care program is patience and time. Results can be seen as soon as after the first two applications. However, it will take about two full seasons of treatment to see the most effective results. The path to a lush, green, weed-free lawn is possible with treatment and time.
